DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement: The Agoura Hills Owner’s Guide

A DoorKing gate motor replacement in Agoura Hills typically runs $650 to $1,350 installed, depending on the model and whether the arm bracket or control board needs replacing at the same time. We stock DoorKing-compatible motors and most swap jobs are done same-day once we confirm your model number. Most owners discover the failure the same way: the gate starts moving slower than it used to, then it groans, then it stops responding entirely. Sometimes it’s the motor itself. Other times it’s the capacitor that starts the motor, or the limit switch that tells it where to stop. The trick is knowing which part actually failed before you spend money on the wrong fix.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing has been building gate operators for over 70 years, and the motor inside a 9150 slide operator is not the same animal as what’s inside a 6002 swing arm or an older 9300. If you’re looking at the operator itself, the model number is stamped on a metal plate on the side of the chassis, usually near the power switch. The motor will have its own label with a part number and a voltage rating, often 115V or 208/230V for residential swing models. Getting a photo of both labels before calling saves us a trip and saves you the cost of a second visit. One compatibility gotcha we see constantly in Agoura Hills: the DoorKing 1601 and 1602 series share motor housings but use different capacitor values, and installing the wrong capacitor burns out a brand new motor within weeks. If you’re tempted to order a cheap online replacement, check the voltage rating twice. A 208V motor wired into a 115V residential panel will run hot and die young. Aftermarket motors do exist for DoorKing, and some are fine. The ones we trust are built to the same frame size and RPM spec. The ones we don’t are universal-fit motors with adapter plates. Universal means sloppy.

Signs Your DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • The gate groans or hums without moving. This is usually the start capacitor failing or the motor’s centrifugal switch sticking. The motor is trying, the gate isn’t listening. Caught early, a capacitor replacement is cheap. Caught late, the windings cook and the whole motor goes.
  • The gate moves at half speed or hesitates mid-travel. Worn brushes on a DC motor or a failing run winding on an AC motor. The gate works, but the amp draw is climbing, and that heat is degrading the insulation on the windings.
  • You have to press the remote twice before the gate responds. The motor isn’t the only suspect here, but a weak start winding makes the first press a false start. The second press catches it. It’s a warning sign, not a fluke.
  • The breaker trips when the gate operates. This is the motor pulling more current than the circuit allows. It happens when bearings wear, the gearbox fills with old grease, or the windings are shorting. In Agoura Hills, heat and hillside dust accelerate every one of these. Dust gets past old seals and turns grease into grinding paste.
  • The gate opens fully but stalls trying to close. On a swing gate, closing requires more torque than opening. A motor that manages one direction but not the other is living on borrowed time. On a slide gate, the same symptom often means the V-belt is slipping and the motor is fine. We check the belt before condemning the motor.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A DoorKing swing gate motor replacement in Agoura Hills generally lands between $650 and $1,350 installed. The spread is driven by which motor your model uses, whether the arm bracket is in good shape, and whether we’re replacing the capacitor and limit switches while we’re in there. For slide operators like the 9150, motors run a bit higher because the gearbox often comes out with the motor and the labor is more involved. Every job gets a written price before we touch a tool. That price includes the motor, the labor to pull the old one and seat the new one, a new capacitor where applicable, and a photo log of the entire job. We don’t hand you an estimate you have to fight about later. We hand you a number, you say yes, that number doesn’t move. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the motor or our installation fails within a year, we fix it for nothing. No argument, no fee, no expiration date inside that window.

DIY or Call Us?

We get it. A motor looks like a bolt-in part. And on some DoorKing models, it nearly is. If you want to check something before you call, check the breaker, check the manual release, and check whether the gate moves freely by hand. If the gate is stiff when you push it, the motor may be fine and the gate is the problem. What we don’t recommend is pulling a motor out of a DoorKing swing operator if you’re not sure how the limit cams are set. The motor shaft on these units is keyed and the cam stack has to go back in the exact same orientation or the gate will over-travel and wreck itself against the post. We’ve fixed enough DIY pulls where the gate slammed full-force into the stop because the limit switch was indexed wrong. If you want to do it yourself, take pictures of everything before you take it apart. If you want it done and documented, call us at (424) 388-2906 and we’ll name the price before anything comes apart.
